Malta flag
The ship register of Malta, the largest in Europe by tonnage and the leading EU flag for yachts. Registration under an EU flag changes the charter and VAT position inside the Union.
Malta is an EU member state, so a Maltese-flagged commercial yacht operates inside the Union on a different footing from the offshore registries: EU charter operations do not depend on Temporary Admission mechanics, and the reformed Maltese lease structure remains available for VAT planning on documented effective use. The Commercial Yacht Code 2025 governs commercial registration, and includes a voluntary route to ISM certification for yachts below the mandatory 500 GT threshold. The trade-off against Cayman or RMI is a fuller EU regulatory and substance environment for the owning entity.
