ISM Code

International Safety Management Code. The mandatory framework under which yachts above 500 gross tonnes operate. Compliance is documented in a Safety Management System.

Definition

The ISM Code, adopted by the IMO in 1993, requires a documented safety management system covering vessel and shore-based operations. For yachts above 500 GT engaged in international voyages, ISM compliance is verified by the flag state or its recognised organisation, with periodic audits and a Document of Compliance held by the company.
