Polar Code

International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters. Mandatory IMO framework covering vessel design, equipment, and operations in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Definition

The Polar Code (in force January 2017 for new build, July 2018 for existing) sets safety, training, and environmental standards for vessels in Arctic and Antarctic waters. Yachts intended for high-latitude cruising require Polar Ship Certification, with categories A, B, or C reflecting ice exposure. Specific build features include winterised systems, ice-strengthened hulls (Class polar notation PC1 to PC7), enhanced damage stability, and trained Polar-rated officers.
