MARPOL Annex VI

International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. Annex VI covers air pollution including SOx, NOx, particulate matter, and CO2 from yachts.

Definition

MARPOL Annex VI sets emission limits for sulphur, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and CO2 from ships. The 2020 global sulphur cap reduced fuel sulphur content to 0.5 percent (0.1 percent in Emission Control Areas). NOx Tier III applies to engines on vessels constructed after 1 January 2016 operating in NOx ECAs. Yachts above 5,000 GT entering EU ports are now within EU ETS Maritime; below 5,000 GT, the cost is not yet direct.
