Definition

Adopted by the IMO under SOLAS in 2002 following the 2001 attacks, the ISPS Code requires vessels above 500 GT engaged on international voyages to operate under an approved Ship Security Plan with a designated Ship Security Officer and Company Security Officer, with port-facility security at three escalating levels. International Ship Security Certificate validity is five years with intermediate verification.
